The first shoot of Manchester at night, with its lights. Here are my chosen pics of the shoot. Not sure how content I am. I think I may have to get out again. These are the unedited versions. My mind may change when I begin to edit them. They are numbered. Let me know if you like any in particular, if any at all....
This is my page for my for one of the modules on my HND Graphic Design course: Extended Advertising, Illustration, Type/Editorial. It is me developing as a designer. Constantly learning and always finding new directions for inspiration.

This is the work of Stewart Linton, a D&AD first prize winer. Really like the way he has used everyday elements to represent the trade mark Fred Perry stripes. The message is well conveyed and immediately understood. The colours that he has chosen to photograph can definitely be expected to be seen on Fred Perry apparel. From Stewart's work, it gives my Ideas to photograph interesting shapes and combine them together to accomplish the Fred Perry logo.
This is the work of Ben Llyod, another D&AD candidate. Its ok, it doesn't really jump out and grab my attention. Still work to reference and draw inspiration from in what direction I would like to take my advertisement.
Quite like this, two images that convey a message of what trend and Image Fred Perry represent.
This is the work of Jon Martin, another D&AD winner. The first image is amazing, so much power of the brand is conveyed through it. The way he uses one font in different ways in the rest of the work is really nice.
Promoting Greater Manchester as a great place to live, study and work.
What makes Manchester is what it is? What are its characteristics? What are the ideas that pop into my head when I think of Manchester?
Obviously the music scene, but I'm bored of constantly basing my design projects on music and my interest in it.
Manchester Lights/The way the city and its buildings are lit at night.
Manchester United vs. Manchester City.
Mod fashion scene.
Busiest buss route in Europe.
Factory Records/The Hacienda: what remain of both buildings and how they have changed over the years.
Industrial Revolution, what buildings and heritage still remain from this era.
Manchester Restaurants, the good ones and the Michelin stars they hold.
Manchester Restaurants, cheap but good ones.
Massive student population.
***For me when I think of Manchester, fashion plays a big role in the city's culture. A specific fashion sense that shines through, is the mod scene. Manchester has a massive mod scene, and the trend flows into all era's of the city's fashion. Mod haircuts and side burns are a Manchester trade mark. If we look at the memorable music bands and artists that originate from the city, like the stone roses and oasis, the mod trend flows into their image. They may not completely stick to the trend but it certainly is evident in their look. Manchester holds some really nice shops that sell mod fashions and that have their own unique vibe. They sell limited edition pieces of clothing and for certain brands are the primary retailer in the North. Manchester has a rich fashion identity within the UK, mod is one of the cities biggest trend and it has a massive depth from brands that carry through the trend to the shops that retail the clothing.***
***Buildings come to life at night when they are illuminated by light, with the fantastic architecture that Manchester has, when night falls and the buildings are lit, further beauty emerges. We are now entering the Christmas season, Christmas lights will fill the city. I think this, coupled with the already beautifully lit buildings, it is possible to capture some amazing images. Some amazing night landscapes can be captured from heights in Manchester. There is also depth behind lighting designers and i could look into who designs the lighting design for the buildings and the Christmas lights.***
I love good food. I love exploring Manchester's different cuisine, wether it may be expensive (if I have my loan in) or cheap. When i visited the website visitmanchester.com it listed the top five cheap eats around Manchester city centre. One of which is a place I constantly go to. Each restaurant has their own unique attributes and trends. They carry character and charm which I believe can be captured very well through photography. Each food outlet could be given be captured and portrayed it their own unique way.
For the advertisement that is required I will stick to the theme of mod. There are a few brands that represent Mods quite well:
**Fred Perry**
Lambretta
Ben Sherman
Clarks
Gabicci

Illustration Research
I couldn't really go for a clean cut font with this style of illustration so I decided to pick a font I liked and that went well with the illustration. I then traced round the outline of the font and scanned it in. I will combine this image with the other part of my illustration, pushing me towards my final outcome.
I developed this style further, I did it on a larger scale so that when I reached the outcome I wanted, it would be easier to manipulate on the the computer. This is my final image split in two as it was too big to scan in as one. Again I quite like the sketchy primary style. It is definitely what I want to achieve for my final outcome...
I started off with this rough sketch, it is along the lines of what I want to achieve with my final outcome. Its very sketch and primary. Quite like it, I will develop the style further.
For Media City I want to create a fun iconic illustration. That will consist of a broad overview of all the major buildings. I want the illustration to be fun to look at, memorable, leave an impact of interest and a want to visit the area. For me the illustration wont represent what media city has to offer, as in facilities etc. I want the illustration to be possibly used as a logo. I want it to be instantly recognisable to what it represents.
Pictures I took at media city and what I will be developing my illustration from...
I started off by looking at the illustrations of Janice J. They kind of look really scrappy, but this makes them unique and they have so much character. You fall in love with them. The pastel colours she adds to the illustrations also add to their charm. Although even when colour isn't used they are so definitive and unique.
After looking at Janice J, her style reminded me of the illustrations that We Love Music use. I researched who was behind their illustrations to find David Tazzyman. I really love this style, I am going to explore it because of the character exudes...
When exploring David Tazzyman I came across the company; Synergyart. They have some fantastic illustrators that I will try to draw inspiration form. My favourites were, Scott Chambers, who also uses a very hand drawn sketchy style of illustration, I really like how he uses colour in his illustrations, as if the lines hold no boundaries and it can be splashed to any part of the piece. I love how the colours blend and fade also...
Jamie Cullen was another illustrator from Synergyart that was one of my favourites. He has a completely different style to the others I have previously mentioned. You get lost in Jamie's illustrations because there is so much going on, they are quite trippy and kind of resemble the illustration that is used in the movie, Yellow Submarine. They are so precise. The colours are very loud and in your face, the shapes are amazing.
vvv AMAZING!!! vvv
